Mission Statement

In 2004, the Robert Bosch Foundation sponsored a survey on German-American relations in
Baden-Württemberg1). This study lists more than 400 institutions and contacts und paints an
impressive picture of the strong sense of cultural exchange between the United States and
Baden-Württemberg. To make these German-American activities more visible, the Robert
Bosch Stiftung and the Kulturamt of the City of Stuttgart approached the German-American
Center/James-F.-Byrnes-Institut e.V. (DAZ) with the initial idea of American Days. As a result
of the combined efforts of various partners on both the City and State level, as well as from
the cultural arena, the first concrete concept has now been drawn up.

The idea has also received support from the State Premier of Baden-Württemberg, Günther
H. Oettinger, who encouraged the organization of American Days within the State during his
welcome address on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the founding of the German-
American Institute in Heidelberg.
The German-American Center / James-F.-Byrnes-Institut e.V. is coordinating the first
American Days in the State Capital Stuttgart and has now -with the help of other partners
from the cultural sphere –developed a first concept.

The purpose of the American Days initiative is to further improve and intensify the
transatlantic dialog in the greater Stuttgart area and Baden-Württemberg region. The pilot
project is planned for the period June 26 –July 6, 2008.

All US citizens, and those with an interest in the US and in transatlantic relations are warmly
welcomed to play a part in structuring a multi-faceted program of activities. American Days
should make the many, already existing German-American activities in town more visible and
encourage others to become active in this intercultural dialogue, as well. We want to actively
engage the general public in the events of American Days and show the great variety of
transatlantic participation and commitment in the greater Stuttgart area.

Events can be independently organized or – even better – in cooperation with other persons
and institutions. The plan is to create an environment for a further improved exchange of
ideas and the establishment of networks among the participants. American Days will
highlight existing German-American activities and focus the attention of the wider public on
the varied nature of ongoing projects. The great diversity of events held during the American
Days will have one thing in common: placing the spotlight firmly on encounters between
people from Germany and the USA. American Days will encourage cultural events in the
widest sense. Events may be organized under a range of categories including readings,
exhibitions, films, seminars, lectures, music, theater, dance, cabaret, city partnerships,
children & young people, advice & information. To strengthen transatlantic understanding
political and economic topics should be incorporated in lectures and discussions, as well as
events highlighting successful cooperations between business and culture.

Overall, American Days shall offer a diverse and well balanced program that will take place
in the mentioned time frame June 26 –July 6, 2008. Other thematically related events that
take place before or after this time period can possibly also be included in the American
Days program.

Since the time of its formation, the DAZ has acted as a point of contact for various
organizations active in the field of German-American relations, and with American Days it will
assume a central coordinating role collecting, bundling and relaying information. The DAZ
will form the main joint in a communications network encompassing the actively involved,
organizers, sponsors, the press and the general public. In planning American Days, the DAZ
will have the continual support of the Kulturamt Stuttgart and the Robert Bosch Stiftung.

All participating institutes and individuals should be able to support their events and activities
fully or mainly with their own funds. American Days funds’ primary use is for coordinating and
advertising all activities as well as supporting a grand opening and a closing ceremony.

American Days – the logo emphasize the United States as the focus of this initiative – is to run
for at least five years so that durable effective networks can be formed between the various actors.
The establishment of American Days will confirm Baden-Württemberg again as a central location
for diverse German-American relations, the cornerstone of which was laid down in the Speech
of Hope given by the then US Secretary of State, James F. Byrnes, on September 6, 1946.

Im Jahr 2004 führte das Deutsch-Amerikanische Institut Tübingen auf Anregung der Robert Bosch Stiftung eine Bestandsaufnahme „Deutsch-Amerikanische Kontakte in Baden-Württemberg durch.* Die Recherche benennt mehr als 400 Institutionen und Kontaktadressen, und sie vermittelt ein eindrucksvolles Bild der intensiven Austauschbeziehungen mit den Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika und der vielfältigen bürgerschaftlichen Aktivitäten zur Festigung der Deutsch-amerikanischen Freundschaft. Auf dieser Grundlage entwickelten die Robert Bosch Stiftung und das Kulturamt der Landeshauptstadt Stuttgart die Idee, künftig jährlich „American Days“ in der Landeshauptstadt durchzuführen.

Ministerpräsident Günther H. Oettinger unterstützt ausdrücklich diese Idee und regte selbst anlässlich der Feier des 60-jährigen Bestehens des Deutsch-Amerikanischen Instituts Heidelberg im Herbst 2006 die Organisation von Amerika-Wochen in Baden-Württemberg an.

Das Deutsch-Amerikanische Zentrum / James-F.-Byrnes-Institut e.V. (DAZ) hat sich bereit erklärt, „American Days“ in der Landeshauptstadt zu koordinieren und inzwischen gemeinsam mit interessierten Partnern insbesondere aus dem kulturellen Leben ein erstes Konzept erarbeitet.

Mit den „American Days“ soll nun der transatlantische Dialog im Großraum Stuttgart und in Baden-Württemberg gestärkt werden. Die ersten „American Days“ im Großraum Stuttgart sollen vom 26. Juni bis 6. Juli 2008 stattfinden.

Zur Gestaltung eines vielseitigen Programms sind alle im Großraum Stuttgart ansässigen US-Amerikaner, „Transatlantiker“ und USA-Interessierten aufgerufen und herzlich eingeladen. Die „American Days“ sollen vorhandene deutsch-amerikanische Aktivitäten sichtbar machen, eine breite Öffentlichkeit auf die Vielfalt
transatlantischen Engagements in unserem Land aufmerksam machen und Anregung für neue amerikabezogene Aktionen sein. Veranstaltungen können in eigener Regie oder – was besonders erwünscht ist – in Kooperation mit anderen Akteuren und Institutionen organisiert werden. Dies soll zu einem regen Austausch
einladen und die Zusammenarbeit verbessern.

Inhaltlich unterschiedliche Veranstaltungen während der „American Days“ sollen ihren gemeinsamen Schwerpunkt in der Begegnung zwischen Menschen aus Deutschland und den USA finden. Erwünscht sind Veranstaltungen im Rahmen eines weit gefassten Kulturbegriffs. Denkbar sind – für alle Altersstufen – Lesungen, Ausstellungen, Musikaufführungen, Theater-, Tanz-und Kabarettveranstaltungen, Filme, Seminare und Veranstaltungen zur Beratung und Information sowie mit Bezug zu den Städtepartnerschaften. Willkommen sind insbesondere auch Aktivitäten für Kinder und Jugendliche sowie von Schulen und Hochschulen. Zur Stärkung des transatlantischen Dialogs können auch politische und wirtschaftliche Fragen in Diskussionen und Vorträgen angesprochen werden, ferner Themen, die die gelungene Zusammenarbeit zwischen Kultur und Wirtschaft sichtbar machen. Insgesamt soll ein vielfältiges, abgerundetes Programm entstehen, das seinen zeitlichen Schwerpunkt in dem genannten Zeitraum Ende Juni bis Anfang Juli 2008 hat. Es werden auch thematisch einschlägige Veranstaltungen im Vorfeld und im Anschluss an die American Days einbezogen.

Das DAZ ist seit seiner Gründung Ansprechpartner und Mittler in den deutschamerikanischen Beziehungen. Es übernimmt daher für die „American Days“ die Rolle der Zentrale, in der Informationen zusammenlaufen, gebündelt, strukturiert und weitergeleitet werden. Damit soll im DAZ ein Kommunikationsnetz zwischenAkteuren, Organisatoren, Förderern und Sponsoren, Presse und Öffentlichkeit aufgebaut werden. Unterstützt wird das DAZ dabei vom Kulturamt der Landeshauptstadt Stuttgart und von der Robert Bosch Stiftung.

Es wird davon ausgegangen, dass die mitwirkenden Akteure ihre Beiträge zunächst mit „Bordmitteln“ und allenfalls dann mit geringfügiger externer Unterstützung durchführen. Die für die „American Days“ zur Verfügung stehenden Mittelsollen vor allem für die Koordination, für Werbung und Öffentlichkeitsarbeit sowie für Rahmenveranstaltungen eingesetzt werden.

Die „American Days“ – das Logo verdeutlicht, dass es sich um „US-American Days“ handelt – wollen eine dauerhafte und tragfähige Vernetzung der Akteure erreichen. Mit ihnen profiliert sich Baden-Württemberg erneut als Kernland der vielfältigen deutsch-amerikanischen Beziehungen, deren Fundament am 6. September 1946 in der „Rede der Hoffnung“ des amerikanischen Außenministers James F. Byrnes in Stuttgart gelegt wurde.
